Battlemachy: Jade Bandit was programmed and designed by myself, Panayoti Haritatos, with assistance from Andrew Pellerano. Graphics by Tim Wendorf. Music by Jessie Tracer. Sound effects by Matt Sayre.
Battlemachy was originally conceived as a super quick “40 hour” project that was designed to get me up to speed with the latest Macromedia (now Adobe) release of the Flash player, ie: Flash Player 9 (and Actionscript 3). I was talking to Andrew about some “quick and dirty” games I could make to learn Actionscript 3.0’s new features and capabilities. He (jokingly, I assume), suggested “Laser Pong” and somehow that is what I ended up deciding to implement. By hour 10, I had something approximating laser pong, but it wasn’t good enough. I started adding in support for variable line paths, for obstacles, and slowly Battlemachy evolved into what you see and play today. And no, it took far far more than 40 hours to complete.
The game’s story has actually been planned out for 3 complete episodes each starring one of the heroes of the Battlemachy universe. The next in the series will feature Oron the Lighthammer and his quest against the Gyena infestation that threatens his sacred homelands. Unfortunately, the original game didn’t pull enough traffic to convince ArcadeTown to come on board for the rest of the series, so its on the back burner until we cruise through some higher priority projects. Of all the Urbansquall games, this one is my favorite, so I’m looking forward to the day that we can give Lighthammer the attention it deserves.
