Do you get any more classic than Tetris? You might, but you need to look to Mario and Pac-Man for that honor. Tetris is iconic and has inspired nearly every block puzzle video game that has been released since. And still, all these years later, there are very, very few titles that can match it for playability.
There have been modern updates made to Tetris, typically around changing the format of the block placement or making it a versus style match… but nothing like 99 Bricks has been done until… well… until 99 Bricks.
99 Bricks is a limited form of Tetris… limited to 99 Bricks specifically. You have 99 separate pieces to stack in an attempt to create the highest tower possible. Sound simple? There’s a catch. This game features quasi-real physics for your blocks. This means that they have weight. They lean, they don’t always slot into spots perfectly, they knock other blocks out of place.
Suddenly, what was once standard Tetris play has turned into a careful act of piece placement so that you’re shoring up the base of what will hopefully turn into an epic tower. Inevitably, your tower will narrow (you only have 99 pieces, after all) as you go for height… and then the crazy swaying and leaning begins. Trying to place a piece on a tower as it rocks back and forth in an effort to keep it from falling farther to one side or the other, and then having to immediately counterbalance it to correct… that’s good gaming.
