If you tell me that you do not love The Princess Bride, then I can only assume you have not read the book or seen the movie. There’s no other conclusion to come to. To adapt a famous quote, saying you don’t like The Princess Bride says a lot more about you than it does about the movie.
Okay, enough of me telling you that you love The Princess Bride (because you DO), The Princess Bride Game is… you guessed it… a game based on the beloved book and film.
I was really on the fence about the game when I first heard about it. Then I learned that they got Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright Penn and Wallace Shawn to lend their voice talents to the game. Well… that’s pretty awesome. This is not the kind of project you expect stars to participate in, so the fact that they did speaks well to the game and helps improve its quality.
On the whole, though, the game is just a fun diversion. You won’t find any deep and challenging gameplay here. You will find great animation of the characters you know, fantastic audio and amusing and light mini-games to play.
There are four core games. One is a task management game (basic and fun… but lacking the features you expect from a stand-alone game of the type), a trivia game (fun and easy for kids… maybe too easy for adults at the start especially), a platformer (controls a little shaky, but is very accessible) and a combo potion mixing and spot the hidden object game (the best game by far in my opinion).
The game is punctuated by short animations of scenes from the movie and just overall has a really charming, clean feel to it. If you love the movie, you’ll enjoy the game. It’s a pretty mild distraction overall… but it’s hard to beat for just plain nostalgia.
